Nicole J.Field
The artist
Painter · Writer · Filmmaker
Nicole J. Field is a multidisciplinary storyteller working across painting, award-winning screenwriting and directing, and poetry and fiction. Her practice is unified by a focus on the unseen — the emotional, psychological, and interior spaces that shape authentic human experience.
In her visual work, Field explores shadow not as absence, but as presence. Through illusionistic oil painting, she creates images that appear to exist behind fogged glass, condensation, or softened barriers, where figures and spaces are partially obscured. Colour often resides within shadow, revealed through tactile gestures that expose saturated passages beneath muted surfaces. In so doing, she implies that there is life in darkness…hope in the unknown.

While her condensation-based trompe l’oeil work is becoming a defining direction, her broader practice reflects an artist in evolution, spanning contemporary figurative expressionism, atmospheric landscapes, and figurative studies.

As an award-winning screenwriter and director, Field crafts emotionally driven narratives that mirror this same tension between concealment and revelation. Her films explore the fragile boundary between inner and outer worlds, often grounded in atmosphere, character, and psychological depth.
Her poetry and fiction extend this exploration further — vivid, immersive, and rich in sensory detail. Here, her voice becomes more expansive and intimate, layering emotion, memory, and image to create deeply felt narrative experiences.
Across paint, words, and film, Field’s work returns to themes of vulnerability, interiority, and the spaces we protect and reveal. In a culture shaped by constant visibility and accelerated image production, Field’s work advocates for the sacredness of mystery, and the honor we have as viewers to witness that vulnerability; the deeply personal psychological space where authentic art begins.
